16 killed in Fresh Delta cult attack,

Eight persons have been confirmed dead and several others rushed to hospital following a clash between a suspected cult group and the vigilantes in Okpara community, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State.

The incident occurred last Sunday when members of a cult group were chased from a robbery scene with some of them apprehended and handed over to security agents.

A source told Our Reporter that members of the cult group were in search of the leader of the vigilante team after arresting some of their members who went on robbery.

The source said that the nine-year-old of the vigilante leader was shot dead by the hoodlums who were accosted after a palm wine tapper raised an alarm that attracted residents of the community and in the process one of the suspected cultists was shot dead.

“Some of the cultists who fled the community came back four days later to avenge the death of their member against community and the vigilantes.

“After the vigilante team leader had avenged the death of his son, carried both dead bodies and took them to town, and that was the beginning of the shoot-on-sight for over four days where eight lives were lost and others seriously injuried.

The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Andrew Aniamaka, could not be reached to confirm the incident as at the time of filing this report.

But the President-General of the community, Chief Akatugba, who confirmed the attack, said: “I have no idea of the number of persons that are dead now but the vigilante chairman. Mr. Onodje Okpubeku, said that the numbers as they commended the police and soldiers for their quick response to calm the situation.
