A federal lawmaker representing Ojo Federal Constituency in the lower legislative chamber, Hon. Tajudeen Obasa has spurred the Nigerian Youths to invest their productive time in Agriculture in order for them to be self reliance.
On 17 December 1999, in its resolution 54/120, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed the recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth (Lisbon, 8-12 August 1998) that 12 August be declared International Youth Day.
The theme of the 2016 International Youth Day is “The Road to 2030: Eradicating Poverty and Achieving Sustainable Consumption and Production”. This year’s Day is about achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
In a statement made available to journalists by his media, Mr Opeyemi Ahmed, the lawmaker appealed to the Federal Government to add more importance to her diversification plan from Oil to Agriculture.
“The independent age in any nation comprises mostly of the youth, any government willing to create jobs and building a conducive atmosphere for businesses to thrive must be ready to invest in her active youth”
” The message of this current government is all about diversification. While the idea is laudable, it can’t be achieved by ‘talk talk’, it can only be met by taking the necessary steps.”
“The first port of call in any economy diversification is Agriculture, it is the sector that controls others, food sufficiency and most raw materials are products of investing in it”
” As for us in Ojo Federal Constituency, the projects done by my office is always related to Agriculture. There is no magic to economic prosperity and independence of the youth if I don’t create a platform for them to be self sufficient ”
Finally, Obasa urged the National Youth Council of Nigeria(NYCN), National Association of Nigerian Students(NANS) and other youth bodies to work on modalities that will ensure smooth collaboration with government at all levels.
