Suspended Chief Priest Threatens Oba Ewuare, demands explanation within 14 days

The Ihogbe N’Ore Royal family has given the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II a 14-day ultimatum to provide proof on the allegations levelled against suspended Chief Priest, Chief Nosakhare Isekhure or face legal action.

It will be recalled that the Benin Traditional Council, the official mouthpiece of the kingdom had suspended Isekhure for alleged negligence before, during and after the Emwinekhua (burial) and coronation and usurping the powers of the Oba.

Ihogbe N’Ore, yesterday in a rejoinder signed by Mr. Osagbakhoe Ogbomuda, wondered why the Palace would engage in such a cheap blackmail, describing it as a “case of giving a dog a bad name so that one can have a reason to hang such dog.”

Ogbomuda said that Isiekhure is a lover and respecter of the Benin tradition and would not stoop so low to the extent of declaring himself the head of the Royal Family ignoring the Oba of Benin.

He added that it was customary for new chiefs to pay homage to the Isekhure as it was the case since 1255AD during the reign of Oba Ewedo.

According to him, Isekhure received no invitation for the Emwinekhua and coronation but had great regards for Oba Erediauwa who has since joined his ancestors and Oba Ewuare II.

Ogbomuda further stated that the Isekhure was given to Ihama’s second son Ezieukhure and has since be performing the role living side by side with the Ihama.

He said: “We are through this medium given 14 days’ notice to the Benin Traditional Council to produce proof of the cases earlier tried in the Palace and the people involved but later reviewed by the Isekhure and also prove how much was collected from such cases.
